Some Protection - Marjut Rimminen

Some Protection - Marjut Rimminen

This animation takes the form of a short documentary based on a true story. It is about a young girl who, "for her own protection", as sent to prison after being raped.

It is narrated by Josie O'Dwyer, the actual girl who the events happened to, with voice clips from other people/characters who appeared in the events.

This animation was created using hand drawings. Evidence of the artist's pencil marking is clear but I feel that this gives a good effect in reflecting the harsh realness of the story being told.
At some points in the animation the images are made up of white drawings on a plain black background, which makes clearer the more darker parts of the film. It helps to illustrate that the things that happened to Josie clearly were despicable and far from the way in which a human should be treated.

Josie's story really connects with the audience, as she is directly telling it to them. The harsh reality of these parts of her life make the audience both sympathetic and angry, and evokes a strong reaction.

I was personally really impressed with this animation (I would say "liked" but I do not think that is the appropriate phrase considering the nature of Josie's story). The way she was treated really did anger me, and, although the way of dealing with issues such as rape has changed a lot since then, it made me think of how many crimes such as rape are not dealt with adequately enough and how women are still not all treated with full respect even today.

I thought that the way of using a method such as animation to raise awareness for this sort of issue was really effective, as, although animation is usually seen as something to be used for entertainment, it was able to aid Josie in the re-telling of her story and create characters, images and scenes to evoke the audience's emotions and enable them to better understand the seriousness of this issue.
