Betty Boop : Snow-White - Cab Calloway - Roland C. Crandall (1933)
This animation was praised highly when it was first released as it had been animated by a single individual, Roland C. Crandall.
This animation is a black and white cartoon, and tells a story based on that of Snow White, starring Betty Boop.
This cartoon is essentially a musical, as there is hardly any actual dialogue, just an ongoing musical soundtrack with various songs sung by the characters.
As this animation I sin the form of a musical, choreography was used throughout. These interesting movements, along with their appearance and voices, helped bring out the characters' personalities, and made it clearer to the audience what their role within the story was.
Repeated backgrounds and movements are used within this animation, and metamorphosis is also heavily used, as one of the main themes of this story is of magic, which enables anything to be possible, and this is something animation is able to do.
After watching the whole animation it is clear to see why Crandall was so highly praised for creating it by himself; personally I think the transitions and movements are very clear and smooth, and the remake of a classic fairy tale was entertaining. It has also made me think more about what I may do for my own animation, as it also will be created by an individual and will be based on a folk tale.
